Ritchie Bros. sells US$9 million of cranes in unreserved Houston auction

Two-day heavy equipment auction attracted buyers from 42 countries

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers (NYSE and TSX: RBA), the world’s largest industrial auctioneer, sold more than 3,300 equipment items and trucks, including 90+ cranes and 500+ former FEMA camper trailers, during a multi-million dollar unreserved public equipment auction at its permanent auction site in Houston, TX last week (August 26 & 27, 2010). Ritchie Bros. sold more than US$9 million of cranes in the auction—the most cranes ever sold by Ritchie Bros. in Houston (by dollar value). More than 3,200 people from 42 countries, including 47 U.S. states, registered to bid in person or online in real time at www.rbauction.com.

“We had a very successful auction with pricing on equipment and cranes well exceeding our expectations, “ said Alan McVicker, Regional Manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “The large selection of cranes attracted buyers from around the world and the bidding action remained high throughout the entire auction. The bidders appreciated the wide range of equipment and the fair, transparent bidding process and the sellers were pleased with the returns they received for their items.”

Buyers from as far away as Mexico, Spain, Chile, Venezuela, Canada and the United Arab Emirates purchased cranes in the auction. Among the cranes sold:

  • 70+ rough terrain cranes and a large selection of all-terrain, crawler and carry deck cranes
  • A 2008 Tadano GR800XL 80-ton rough terrain crane that sold for US$430,000 and a 2008 Tadano GR600XL1 60-ton rough terrain crane that sold for US$400,000 (both purchased by buyers from Canada)
  • A 2006 Link-Belt 138H 80-ton crawler crane purchased by a local buyer for US$425,000
  • A 2001 Manitowoc 111 Series B 80-ton crawler crane purchased by a buyer from Arizona for US$355,000

The auction also featured 500+ late model ex-FEMA camper trailers that were used to provide temporary shelter to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

“Given the large amount of FEMA camper trailers that have been sold across the Gulf Coast to date, prices on the camper trailers remained steady, with a strong contingency of new bidders present at the auction interested in buying them,” said Mr. McVicker.

More than 80 hydraulic excavators, 75+ crawler tractors, 50+ loader backhoes, several motor graders, trenchers and articulated dump trucks, and several late model Peterbilt and Mack triple-axle dump trucks were among the other equipment and transportation items sold in the auction.

There are more than 80 unreserved public auctions around the world on the Ritchie Bros. auction calendar at www.rbauction.com. The next Ritchie Bros. auction in Texas will be the Grand Opening of the Company’s new facilities in Fort Worth on September 29 & 30. Grand Opening celebrations will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Ritchie Bros. officials and local dignitaries. The Fort Worth auction already features more than 560 heavy equipment items—with more items being added daily—all to be sold on auction day to the highest bidders, regardless of price. For complete equipment and auction details, please visit www.rbauction.com and click on the Fort Worth, TX link in the auction calendar.

New “baby” MF compact tractor ideal for yard or field

Massey Ferguson has added a new agricultural specification compact tractor to its well-established 1500 Series line-up.

Known as the MF 1520A, the 19.5hp four-wheel drive tractor replaces the identically-powered MF 1519M within a newly-rationalised range which encompasses models from 19.5hp to 46hp in mechanical, hydrostatic and DynaQPS transmission versions.

Ideal for smaller-scale agricultural, horticultural and equine enterprises, the MF 1520A combines exceptionally compact dimensions and low weight with economical power output and good torque delivery across the speed range. To that end, the tractor features a new mechanical shuttle transmission with eight forward and eight reverse gears and has a mechanically-engaged 540rpm rear power take-off with mid-PTO offered as an option.

Among the upgrades found on the MF 1520A over its predecessor are significant improvements in operator comfort and space, an increase in fuel tank capacity from 25 litres to 28 litres and a greater rear linkage lift capacity, up from 540kg to 600kg. The result is a multi-purpose “baby” compact tractor capable of working harder and for longer with reduced driver effort and fatigue.

A notable feature of all Massey Ferguson agricultural specification compact tractors is a forward-folding ROPS positioned ahead of the ISO-mounted semi-flat operator’s platform.
With its hinge point located below the level of the tractor’s bonnet, the fully-folded ROPS on the MF 1520A enables comfortable tractor access to and working capabilities within low farm buildings and horticultural structures as well as beneath tree branches in fields and paddocks. When folded, the roll bar provides excellent protection also for the front end of the tractor.

Supplied with a single auxiliary valve as standard, the MF 1520A is priced from £11,820. It will be arriving from September onwards at Massey Ferguson dealers throughout the UK and Ireland from whom demonstrations and more information are readily available on request.

National & European Ploughing Championship

National Ploughing Association is delighted return to the Fennin Farm again this year as last year’s event was a resounding success, both from the quality of the land for the much important ploughing competitions to the accessibility of the site for exhibitors and visitors.

Ploughing has always been a sport between neighbouring farmers in Ireland. This sport reached a point in 1931 when two farmers from Kildare and Wexford had an argument over which county had the best ploughmen. As a result the National Ploughing Association was born and the first National Ploughing Championships were held in Athy, Co Kildare, with a total of 40 entries. Not much is known about this first plouging championship, but it is known that Wexford won the county championship with Wicklow and Kilkenny finishing second and third while Edward Jones won the individual title.

Early ploughing competitions were for horse drawn ploughs, and it was not until 1949 that tractor ploughing became part of the competition. Since then the Ploughing Championships have kept pace with the development of machinery and technology of farming equipment. Today the National Ploughing Championship is the largest annual exhibition in Ireland and is run by the National Ploughing Association of Ireland.

Today the National Ploughing Championships attracts crowds in excess of 100,000 people over the three days that make up the event. Today the championship is on such a scale that nearly 1,000 stalls will be present to showcase machinery, industrial equipment, cars, tools, gadgets, livestock, household items, books, animal feed and fashion among many other things. The event is truly a national event and attracts visitors from all walks of Irish life, and not just the farming community.

New Holland shows you the money – UK only

With the budget heralding new times of austerity, finding the right package to finance agricultural machinery has never been so crucial. New Holland’s new range of finance options, available through CNH Capital, offer high-performance, need-specific financing solutions ranging from the most straightforward to the most complex scheme.

CNH Capital has introduced a raft of enhanced finance schemes, each individually tailored to meet the varied needs of today’s customers who demand flexibility in line with business objectives and cash-flow restrictions.

CNH Capital Area Sales Manager, Peter Benton, explains: “We have listened to our customers about what they really need from us in terms of the type of farming operation they run and how they prefer to finance their equipment.

“Options include; two or three year term monthly payments and three year term annual payments, with the option to defer the first payment for six months should the customer wish to tie this in with receipt of their Single Farm Payment. Interest free payments and an additional level of built-in flexibility means these schemes offer a solution for all.”

This rationale is backed-up at dealer level within New Holland’s extensive UK network. Ernest Doe and Sons (Fulbourn) salesman, Tim Doe, comments:

“When I sit down with my customers I know I’m armed with some of the best finance options available in the marketplace. These competitive products enable my customers to own the machinery they really need in a way that fits their budgets, allowing them to keep moving and concentrate on getting the most out of their business.”

CNH Capital is also able to offer 0% finance for 12 months for large repair bills and for Precision Land Management products. This special offer is available until 31st December 2010.

Caterpillar To Build Excavator Assembly Plant In Texas

Caterpillar Inc plans to open an excavator assembly plant in Victoria, Texas, that will employ more than 500 people and triple the company’s capacity to produce excavators in the U.S.

Caterpillar, the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer, expects production work at the 600,000-square-foot plant to begin in the middle of 2012. Construction of the plant will start next month.

“Based on our comprehensive review of possible locations, Victoria’s proximity to our supply base, access to ports and other transportation, as well as the positive business climate in Texas made this the ideal site for this project,” said Gary Stampanato, Caterpillar Vice President with responsibility for excavators. “Caterpillar is committed to maintaining its global leadership position in the excavator industry, and this new facility in Texas will play an important role in our long-term plans to provide customers in every region of the world with the products and solutions they need to help them with their businesses.”

In addition, Caterpillar produces excavators in Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Indonesia, Japan and Russia.

The new facility will manufacture the two models now made in Aurora, as well as several additional excavator models now produced in Akashi, Japan, and exported to the United States.

Caterpillar said the expansion of excavator production in the U.S. will allow its facility in Japan to better serve the growing demand for excavators in Asia.

The manufacturer recently announced plans to quadruple excavator capacity at its manufacturing facility in Xuzhou, China, primarily in support of growing demand in the Chinese market.
