This year’s bauma, the 29th International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment, will set a new record in the number of exhibitors. A total of 3,150 exhibitors from 53 countries are currently setting up their stands and exhibits on 555,000 square metres of exhibition space. When bauma was last held in 2007, it was a record-breaking event in the fair’s more than 50-year history: It had 540,000 square metres of exhibition space that was booked to capacity and a total of 3,002 exhibitors from 49 countries. As a result, the final statistics for bauma 2010 will include four more exhibitor countries and 148 more exhibitors than the last time that the fair was held.

Giant construction machines make their way to bauma 2010 in Munich

Spring started in Bavaria this last weekend. And along with it came the first of the giant construction machines – arriving at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. The entire open-air site is a hive of activity at the moment – drilling, digging, hammering and assembly work is going on everywhere, to make sure the display is in tip-top shape ready for the opening of bauma.

Between 19 and 25 April 2010 the International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment, is opening its doors in Munich for the 29th time. And this time it will be even bigger and stronger than ever before: a new all-time record is being set for exhibition space at over 555,000 square metres; and over 3,000 exhibitors from all over the world will be here. Among the exhibits announced for the exhibition are many world premieres and an impressive array of heavyweight machinery. The only place to see such an extensive display of this kind is every three years in Munich.

From today onwards we are expecting around 6,000 trucks to arrive at the fair ground, bringing stand-building equipment and exhibits in time for the show. Some of the largest exhibits arrive in sections, in separate deliveries, for assembly at the exhibition centre.

bauma Exhibition Director Georg Moller comments: “Despite the logistics challenge faced in particular by our technical team and transport coordinators, we are really looking forward to this unique set-up phase for bauma. Each day we are excited to see the tremendous progress being made on setting up the stands and assembling the machines. The site fills up more and more each day.”

The heaviest exhibits in particular have been travelling to the show for weeks, some by sea, some by rail, before making the last part of the journey to the fair by truck.

The bauma Forum at bauma 2010, the International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment, is covering an even more extensive and broad-ranging spectrum of themes than at the last event in 2007. According to Exhibition Manager Georg Moller, during the preparations for the forthcoming edition of bauma, exhibitors from other sections also proposed interesting themes, and these are now being included in an expanded programme. The first time the bauma Forum was held in 2007, around 60 speakers delivered lectures on mining, tunnel construction and processing technology.

One highlight in the many discussions and lectures will be the country specials which are being organised in cooperation with Germany´s engineering federation (Verband deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau – VDMA) on the markets of Asia, America, CIS/Russia and India. The Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Kamal Nath, will be opening a symposium on the first day of the fair on the construction industry and infrastructure in India.

Also, on Saturday, 24 April 2010, when visitor attendance is particularly high, there will be a panel discussion in the Forum in which representatives from higher education and research will be reporting on the latest trends, innovations and technologies in the area of mining.

The full programme of events in the bauma Forum at bauma 2010 is published on the fair´s website at: http://www.bauma.de/en/Forum.
The bauma Forum is once more positioned right in the heart of the fair, in Hall C2. Events will be held there on all six days of the fair, from 19 to 25 April. All visitors to bauma can attend the events and lectures here free of charge.

bauma – mining and tunnel construction

The new hydraulic hammer by Atlas Copco is fitted with PowerAdapt, a system that automatically switches the machine off when the oil pressure becomes too high. This is particularly useful when the hammer is being used on different carrier equipment, because hydraulic hammers can become overloaded hydraulically if the oil pressure on the carrier equipment is not set correctly. As these hammers are subject to the toughest of conditions, the improved guide system brings improved stability and resistance. With a weight of around 3150 kg, the HB 3100 can be fitted to carrier equipment in the 30- to 52-tonne class.

Continental is offering its tyres for heavy-duty earthmoving machinery under the brand name of Simex. The wide-based tyre Simex SE65 is especially suited for use with wheel loaders and bulldozers, which are used in the toughest conditions in quarries or in mining. These tyres have a very deep tread. The almost flat profile ensures good load distribution and the opposing cross grooves give excellent traction. The rubber mix used is largely resistant to cuts and abrasion.

Sandvik Mining and Construction will be presenting their new impact crusher QI 240. In the development, the focus was primarily on the crushing of recycling or building materials. However, because of its compact design, the model is also suited for use in smaller quarries where there is little space to maneuver, but where first-class product quality and high throughput are required. The QI 240 is the first of a new series of mobile crushers and screens that Sandvik will be launching in the coming months.

bauma – excavators and loaders

For earthmoving operations and material handling, excavators and loaders are essential equipment. bauma once again promises to be a giant shop window for new models, specially designed, manufactured and adapted to better meet the requirements of the market.
LiuGong Machinery Corporation is one of the many Chinese companies that will be represented at the exhibition. Among its principal products are wheeled loaders – according to LiuGong, the company has a world market share of over 17 percent in this category of machine. A new development, especially for the European market, is the 816G. With a shovel capacity of eight cubic m. and a rated load of 1600 kg, the 816G is suitable for moving materials in landscaping operations, or for loading into small concrete and gravel systems.
British manufacturer JCB will be presenting a new range including its latest and smallest mini telescopic loader, the 515-40 Miniscopic. This machine is just 1.8 m high, 2.97 m long and weighs less than 3.5 tonnes. It offers four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and a hydrostatic transmission, a feature that in combination with the compact design is the secret to the machine’s maneuverability in the smallest of spaces and on uneven ground. The Miniscopic loader can be used within buildings or containers. In addition, thanks to its low weight, its operation on softer ground is improved. With its 50hp Deutz engine, it can lift 1,500 kg to a 4 m height.

bauma – the cranes

In terms of size and performance, the American manufacturer Terex will be exhibiting the impressive nine-axle all-terrain crane AC 1000. At 163.3 m. high, this crane has a lifting power of up to 1,000 tonnes.

Tadano has entered the league of crawler crane manufacturers. Tadano Ltd from Japan and the German Tadano Faun GmbH will be appearing at bauma together with their new US-based subsidiary, Tadano Mantis Corporation. They will be bringing along the telescopic crawler crane GTC-700EX. With a counterweight limited to a maximum of 15.9 tonnes and a low centre of gravity the machine, which Tadano says, can also climb steeper grades. Its maximum hook height is around 49.4 m. and capacity is 70 tonnes.

A modern crane also needs advanced grab technology. Kröger Greifertechnik claims to be the world market leader in large hydraulic grabs. One of the main advantages of their two and multi shell hydraulic grabs is that they are maintenance free. Meaning, no time consuming and labour intensive lubrication. As well as many applications in inland and maritime ports, Kröger grabs are also used for raw materials extraction, by building materials manufacturers, in the steel industry and in the waste processing sector.

In the coming years new tighter emissions restrictions will come into force for various types of vehicles used in the construction sector.
Deutz will be presenting a brand new engine design, the TCD 20XX. This ultra compact, 2.9 litre cubic capacity, four-cylinder in-line engine was specifically developed to meet the requirements of the construction industry in the 28 to 55.9kW power range, thus meeting the requirements of Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final. The engine is designed so as not to exceed the 56kW threshold and does not need a diesel particulate filter or its associated complex regeneration technology.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have developed a drive system consisting of a high performance lithium ion battery, a diesel engine, two induction engines and a converter. The company will be presenting a forklift fitted with this combination which it is claimed achieves an increase in fuel efficiency of 39 percent in comparison to fork lifts of the same loading capacity as operated on conventional combustion engines.
