- ZF has been an established development partner of the construction machinery industry for more than five decades.
- Constant innovations have brought us down the road to success.
Anniversary at ZF Passau: for more than 50 years ZF has been developing and producing driveline technology and axle systems for construction machinery at its location in Passau. During this time ZF has become a future oriented technology partner of all renowned vehicle manufacturers on the global construction machinery market. Thanks to constant innovations ZF also remains a pioneer when it comes to trends like emission reduction, consumption savings and increase of productivity.
ZF is now celebrating two world premieres: „ZF cPower“ a continuously variable construction machinery transmission and „ZF Ergopower Hybrid”, with which ZF is heralding the hybrid era for construction machinery.
ZF’s path in construction machinery started off with powershift transmissions, planetary design and reduplan transmissions for wheel and crawler excavators. Later on the ZF product portfolio has been extended by steering and rigid axles for construction machinery. Another milestone has been achieved by the production of a new transmission for lift trucks as well as a concrete mixer truck transmission with integrated hydro motor.
At the beginning of the eighties a new independent development and design department has been set up in the Passau location, focussing on the product development of construction machinery axles. The Transmission Development Department remained at the Friedrichshafen Headquarters.
Success Model Ergopower
In 1997 series production of the ZF-Ergopower transmission started. This series features “shifting without tractive effort interruption” as well as simple and ergonomic handling. Down to the present day Ergopower transmissions are still common practice in many wheel loaders, dumpers and aircraft tow tractors.
Hermann Beck, Vice President Business Unit Construction Machinery Systems at ZF Passau, highlights the success story: „ZF develops the whole driveline ranging from transmissions over axles to hydraulic / electronic control elements and functional software. Thanks to the optimized interaction with diesel engine and working hydraulics the driveline becomes an integral component of the overall vehicle system. This is the only way to achieve up to 20 percent fuel savings as well as up to 40 percent productivity increase e.g. in the latest transmission generation.“
International Market Orientation
Starting off on the domestic and European market, in the sixties ZF Passau entered into the US market. It was possible to gain large customers, like e.g. John Deere, who are still today counting on ZF quality. „Especially the development partnership between ZF and the vehicle manufacturers forms the basis for a long-term cooperation“, explains Dr. Manfred Schwab, Group Executive of ZF Passau GmbH and Head of Off-Road Driveline Technology and Axle Systems the fact that with some customers it is possible to look back on several decades of customer loyalty. This also points out the special position of trust ZF has gained with its customers. Today ZF Passau is represented with driveline technology and axle systems for construction machinery on all international markets with its export rate of over 80%. A global logistics and service net keeps ZF units on the job.
